In early 1991, a group of Utah dietary supplement executives met to discuss the growing state of emergency surrounding the dietary supplement industry. FDA seemed intent on attacking a growing range of products and companies, even doctors’ clinics. Their goals: treat many herbs as drugs, limit the potency of amino acids and make health statements of any kind illegal for all supplements. Having looked at all options, this group concluded the only real solution was to change the law. Their resolve led to the formation of an organization which was named the Utah Natural Products Alliance and elected Loren lsraelsen Executive Director. This group, often called the “Utah Group,” hired the best lawyers
and lobbyists available and set about to help craft a legislative model that would recognize dietary supplements and consumer rights of access to these products. UNPA called on its good friend, Senator Orrin Hatch, who quickly agreed to sponsor legislation. After two and a half years of intense battling, and with the extraordinary support of the entire dietary supplement industry and its consumers, the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act became law in November of 1994.
